Last of the Comforting Dark

Sometimes, when I'm listening to music, ideas for paintings, particularly abstracts, form themselves in my head.
Last of the Comforting Dark
Watercolour on watercolour paper, 8 1/4" x 11 3/4"
This piece was inspired by the song 'The Last Time I Saw Richard' from Joni Mitchell's 1971 album, Blue. This wonderful singer/songwriter (and painter!) has been such an important influence in my artistic life, from when I was in college in the '70's right up to the present day.

My roommate from college was THE Joni Mitchell gal...I recently bought the glorious CD w/ 'Woodstock' on it....'Ladies of the Canyon' ...music often inspires my...I too have my favorites...interesting, loose, free painting...love the 'just kind of playing around' pieces...

Leaves me feeling quite peaceful.

It's amazing how versatile you are - from abstract to detail, you can do it all! I was never a Joni Mitchell fan - more Rolling Stones! but I can understand her music inspiring this piece.

I love this painting. I'm amazed at the power you can put into a watercolour.

Very emotional and beautiful painting! I love that music can do that to us as artists.

Thanks Amy. A lot my abstract work is just playing around and seeing what comes from it.

Thanks Deronda. Yes it does have that peaceful feeling.

Thanks Liz. Actually I was a bit of a hippy, prog rock, folk, that sort of stuff.

Thanks Jakill. Yes, watercolour does have a reputation has being a rather light and gentle medium, but it can be quite powerful.

Thanks Kate. Whenever I listen to music , I always viualise it in terms of shapes and colours.

I must try abstracts with watercolour. This one looks mystical. I believe painting inspired by music are always beautiful. Good luck for the exhibition.
