All in a Row, Robin Hood's Bay

Well, Monday we had our first proper snowfall of the winter. I was straight out with my camera taking loads of photos. Snow tends not to hang around too long here , so I wanted to get loads of reference material for future paintings.
Meanwhile, I'm still painting the summer!
This latest watercolour shows the beach at Robin Hood's Bay, a small village on the North Yorkshire coast, just south of Whitby.

Thanks for the comment Nancy. Think I may be concentrating on more Whitby/Robin Hood's Bay paintings this week and start on paintings of snowy Nottingham next week.

Love your watercolours. I was intrigued that they are mainly of Whitby as Whitby is one of the places mentioned in my family tree. One of my ancestors immigrated from Whitby to Melbourne (Australia) back in the 1800s. It looks like an interesting place.

Your art is so beautiful. I enjoy reading your blog also. I love the one called all in a row. It reminds me of the times that my family and I went to the beach in Southern California when I was a child. Just the idea of sitting on the beach is so appealing to me.

I'm right there...at least in my mind..we have what you have in the UK...the beach, the coast is a slice of heaven for my husband and me...especially if it's a good walking beach...we could go forever...beautiful, beautiful painting John!!

Chris - I know that Whitby was an important point of departure for people emigrating to Australia and America in the 18th and 19th centuries. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Stormee - yes, I'm a sucker for anything to do with the coast, beaches, sea. Just reminds me of summer holidays when I was young.... aahhh, so carefree!!

Amy - although I'm in Nottingham in the Midlands, it's only about an hour and half's train ride to the coast!! So we're really quite fortunate. Yes I agree, the coast is just heaven.

Storybeader - yes, snow and summer, slightly weird, I know. But that's how I often find things working out, painting summer in the winter and winter in the summer. I'm not really a 'plein-air' painter. I usually photograph and sketch when I'm out and then do the finished paintings indoors. So I quite often end up not painting the season I'm in. Still, it's fun!! (Best of luck in the competition)

I can't wait for summer! I live in the northeastern part of the USA and we've had snow for what it seems like forever. Your painting is a good reminder that winter isn't forever.

Took me back to days on the beach with my family, Mum Dad and everyone, a row of deckchairs on the beach with the deckchair attendant not far away! You don't see any deckchairs anymore these days, they were such a colourful sight, I liked them when they were all stacked away in piles on the beach when everyone had gone home to tea! More nostalgia please.
